Ajmer Ana Sagar Lake

Introduction of Ana Sagar Lake

Ana Sagar Lake is a man-made lake located in the city of Ajmer in Rajasthan state of India. It was founded by Anaji Chauhan, the grandfather of Prithvi Raj Chauhan, in 1135 -1150 AD and is named after him.

The catchments were built with the help of local public. The lake extends over an area of 12 Kms. Pavilions of the lake were constructed in 1637 by Shahjahan and Daulat Bagh Gardens by Jahangir. There is a Circuit house on a hill close to the lake which was a British Residency at a time. There is an island in the center of the lake which is reachable by boat. Boats could be hired from the east side of the Dault Bagh. There are Jetty walkway and Chowaptty which are adjacent to each other and Baradari to capture the picturesque of the lake. The lake is the largest lake in Ajmer, with catchment area of 5 square km.

The lake is about 4.4 m deep and has a storage capacity of 4.75 million cubic meters. It is one of the most beautiful lakes of India. The lake has been an wonderful attraction of the city of Ajmer from the 11th century.

Best Season to visit Ajmer is between the months of July to September. Winters are mild and the city receives average to heavy rainfall during monsoons.

 
History of Ana Sagar Lake

The scenic Ana Sagar Lake in Ajmer was built by emperor “Anaji Chauhan”, who is the grandfather of “Prithvi Raj Chauhan”. Therefore, the lake is named after the ruler Anaji Chauhan. King Anaji Chauhan built this lake at some between 1135 -1150 AD. He built this lake for the improvement of the society. Ana Sagar Lake was built by raising a dam across the “Luni or Lavanavari River”. The catchments of the lake were built with the help and support of the society. The attractive Pavilions nearby the lake were built by the Mughal emperor Shahjahan in the year 1637. The “Daulat Bagh Gardens” that encloses the Ana Saga Lake were built by Mughal ruler Jahangir. The circuit residence that is placed on the hilltop nearby Ana Sagar Lake once served as British Residency.

Surrounded by some amazing pavilions and attractive “Daulat Bagh” gardens, Ana Sagar Lake is one of the most beautiful places in Rajasthan. The beautiful lake of Ana Sagar is enclosed by some other attractions like “Khobra Behroon” shrine which is situated on the southern part of the lake. Other prominent tourist spots nearby Ana Sagar Lake are Adahi-Din-Ka Jhopra, Taragarh Fort, Prithviraj Smarak and Nasiyan. Also, one can view a serene island at the center of Ana Sagar Lake. One can reach the island on water scooter or a boat. One can take a boat or water scooter at the eastern side of “Dault Bagh” to enjoy a boat ride. Tourists and visitors can wander around the lake on the widespread Dault Bagh. Don’t forget to pay a visit to all these attractions as well.
