History of Deogarh

In the olden days, 'Rawat', the chief of Deogarh was one of sixteen umraos (feudal barons), who was entitled to wait upon the Maharana of Udaipur, the capital of Mewar. These feudal estates were known as the 'Thikanas' and were sanctioned by the ruling Maharana to a nobleman either due to blood relationship or for an act of valour. Deogarh was also the seat of the Chundawat clan of Sisodia Rajputs. The fort of Deogarh or the Deogarh Mahal was built in the 1670 AD by Rawat Dwarka Dasji as a family residence.

Tourist Attractions in Deogarh

The main tourist attraction in Deogarh is the Deogarh Mahal. The Deogarh Mahal is situated on a hill top and provides an awesome view of the Aravallis and lakes. This palace belongs to the 17th century. About 3 years ago, Deogarh Mahal was converted into a heritage hotel, by the present owner Rawal Nahar Singh. A part of the Mahal is still occupied by his kin who look after the hotel. Another attraction in Deogarh is the exquisite Dashavatar temple. This temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu and belongs to the Gupta period when it was known as the Panchayatan temple. This temple is the first north India temple to have a shikhara or spire where only the lower part of the shikhara is present today.
